Excercise of the Week 08 - Stability - Four Cone Touch

Exercise of the Week Blog - June 2021

I hope you have been enjoying watching some of the French Open this week, it has been great to watch some top quality matches and see how the players excel in so many areas. As always, I enjoy being able to take inspiration from the professional tour and see where I can implement it into junior training to create high quality athletes.

Arguably, balance is one of the most important factors in tennis; this quality underpins all movement. It is the management of equilibrium in both static and dynamic situations. Think of how wide the top players can be stretched off the court, yet can maintain dynamic balance. The best players look so fluid in their on-court movement due to exceptional levels of balance.

The benefits of improving a player's balance include reducing the risk of injury and improving performance via enhanced proprioception (the body's ability to perceive its own position in...

Excercise of the Week 07 - Straight Line Change of Direction

Uncategorized Jun 03, 2021

At SuperMovers we incorporate this exercise into sessions to help players become faster out of corners on-court. It is a really great way of getting players to focus on the optimal way to put the brakes on, change direction and re-accelerate

In match play it is a useful tool in a player's armoury, allowing them to better cope with an opponent who is moving them from side to side.

To make it more specific you can add a ball for them to catch or add a shadow swing.

Exercise of the Week 06 - Square Drill

Uncategorized May 27, 2021

Key to effective movement on-court is a combination of visual perception and change of direction skills, which is where this week's drill comes in! It helps players improve their acceleration, deceleration and change of direction.

In the video you can see how I introduce the exercise to a group of players for the first time and showing you the steps to build the drill step by step.

You can make the drill more competitive, firstly by getting players to race against each other to complete the drill, as well as adding a tough ball feed so players have to chase and catch it.

The Athlete Development Show - Tennis Fit

Uncategorized May 27, 2021

Podcast Blog - May 2021

Check out the podcast that I recently recorded, it is part of the Athlete Development Project created by leading coach and researcher, Craig Harrison.

Craig has a single goal - to help young athletes play the game they love without getting injured, overtraining or burning out.

His does this by combining research in biomechanics and physiology and in the science of motivation and how young people learn.

I really enjoyed this interview, as Craig was really interested in my backstory and life experiences. He questioned on how these elements have impacted my coaching process and practice.

Some of the topics I covered were:

The impact on me being late to physically mature.

How I formed my coaching philosophy which is: “I will use my professional knowledge and personal experiences to model and encourage high performance habits in training, mindset and lifestyle’.

The pros and cons of having an elitist mindset.

Using the concepts of battle...

On-court SuperMovers Warm Up with Howard - Part 2

Uncategorized May 20, 2021

Part Two - SuperMovers 'SMASH' Warm-up with Howard Green

Welcome to the second part of this blog where you will get to watch a video of Howard delivering a specific Tennis SuperMovers warm-up routine. The content covers the SuperMovers SMASH method which includes – Strength, Movement, Agility, Stability and Honing Coordination. Before doing this warm-up, check our on-court warm-up Part 1. This second part will focus on the Agility, Stability and Honing Coordination components.

Within the Agility section we are looking for players to move with speed and intensity. The SuperMovers programme has six foundational levels and within each level there are three session plans, with each one having a different movement focuses categorised as Forward & Backward, Side-to-Side and Multi-Directional. This ensures that players following the programme become skilled at moving in all directions on the court.

In this warm-up routine the drill we use is the 3 Step Forward into Push Back,...

Exercise of the Week 05 - Orientation Drill

Uncategorized May 20, 2021

Hi Guys,

This weeks exercises comes from the SuperMovers Agility library, it would fit into a Multi-Direction training session. The goals are to work on orientating the body in the air and moving backwards. This would help players when dealing with movement to a deep ball and after the serve too.

I have included  footage of me coaching some of our younger players during a session, so you can see how I coach the drill. The other footage is taken from our SuperMovers At Home programme, which allows players to train at home of by the court, to improve their tennis athleticism. As you can see you can work on key areas of you physical development in a small area, Check out Tennis SuperMovers Programme for more info.

On-court SuperMovers Warm Up with Howard - Part 1

Uncategorized May 13, 2021

In this two-part blog you will get to watch and listen to a ‘fly on the wall’ video of Howard delivering a warm-up routine. The content covers the SuperMovers SMASH method which includes – Strength, Movement, Agility, Stability and Honing Coordination.

The first part of the warm-up is the pulse raiser. The goal is to increase the heart hate and body temperature. We prefer to use a mixture of locomotion patterns versus jogging around the court, as players get to rehearse the technique needed to move forwards, backwards and sideways.

Second comes the Strength element, this is made up of a squat pattern, a dynamic core movement, a lunge variation and finally a core bracing exercise. The goal here is to expose the player to the different integrated tennis shapes that are required for optimal movement on the court.

The final element in this first video is the Movement section, here we are completing an exercise we call Free Running Zig-Zag. Here we...

Exercise of the Week 04 - Balloon Relay Race

Balloons are a great way to boost engagement, challenge coordination and add some fun to training. They can also be a good tool to 'hide' movement patterns and drive the intent from the players.

In this video I break the drill down in to its individual parts, allowing you to see how you can progressively build the exercises together and make it competitive.
