Exercise of the Week 03 - Row, Rotate, Press

Uncategorized May 06, 2021

Hi Guys,

Check out the above video which breaks down an exercise we use for shoulder health with our players. These movements can be used prior to tennis to warm up, or away from the court to develop strength and stability.

These exercises are good for reducing the risk of injury and improving the serve and groundstrokes too.

Follow this link to access the free SuperMovers shoulder and wrist programme I mention in the video: https://www.tennissupermovers.com/pl/2147487149

If you want your player to learn the shapes and exercises that underpin tennis performance, whilst reducing the risk of injury, then you need to take a look at our online programme - SuperMovers At Home - https://www.tennissupermovers.com/SuperMovers-at-Home

See you next week!

Check out the above video which breaks down an exercise we use for teaching players to create movement in different directions. Is a great drill to work on the physical qualities for the split-step and change of direction.

Podcast Blog - April 2021

This week saw my latest podcast chat go live with Kris Soutar who produces the popular 'Tennis Journal' podcast. We discussed how my previous experience in the military shapes many parts of my coaching every day.

One key focus for me is accountability and how this can affect a player's match play and results. Daily routines, habits and consistency help provide young players with the right platform so they can being accountable for themselves during a match and keep the right mindset.

In everyday training, try setting some targets for your players, such as always being punctual for sessions, have their water bottle filled, have the right equipment with them, eg, bands to warm up their shoulders.

It may sound small but these really set the foundation for a professional accountable attitude for their tennis career.

For more insights from me, take a listen below and feel free to get involved in the conversation online over...

Podcast Blog - April 2021

I was recently interviewed for the popular podcast 'The Adam Blicher Show – Dissecting High Performance in Tennis'. It was great to asked as he has hosted some big names in tennis previously, such as Carl Maes, Magnus Norman and Sarah Stone, as well as several personal friends and colleagues including Jonny Fraser, Jaime Fernandez and Dom King.

You can listen to the podcast in full via the links below, but I wanted to share some additional information around my experiences serving in the Royal Marine Commandos, and how that has shaped the SuperMovers At Home programme and how mastering the integrated tennis shapes can successfully impact your tennis performance.

Concept of Rehearsal

I have applied many things I learned in my time in the Royal Marines to my career as a tennis-specific S&C coach, from maintaining high professional standards, to being adaptable when planning and the concept of rehearsal.

Players can utilise...

High Performance = Habits

High Performance = Your actions, not the amount of funding you receive or the tournaments your players compete in.

This is off the back of a conversation I had with a coach, in which we discussed what does performance mean? In order to achieve performance, you do not rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems/actions. I am paraphrasing James Clear, who has written an awesome book on the power of habits called Atomic Habits – I can highly recommend it.

In my experience in the world of junior tennis, the words ‘performance tennis environment’ are usually associated with receiving funding from the national governing body; input from national coaches; players being selected for camps and trips; and players competing at international events. And undoubtedly, these situations do exist – think about the current set-up in the UK of the National Academies and Regional Player Development Centres.

But the question is, is this the only...

How can parents help young tennis players?

You just want the best for your child, help to remove all the barriers, help them to fulfil their true potential. What parent doesn't?

We ask around, other parents, those who's child might be a little older, maybe performing at a level you "know" your child is capable of, even of beating perhaps. Ask all the coaches you know, look on the internet. Instagram , youtube, so many experts.

Everyone knows the best thing for your child. They throw around terms like Increase their force production, work on thoracic mobility, increase their acceleration, deceleration mechanics. Do plyometrics. But what does it all mean?

What is really best for my child?

Who are the best people to talk to?

Well, the best people to talk to about improving the physical capabilities of an athlete is someone with a history of developing athletes at the highest level. Maybe international tennis, maybe Premierleague football, Olympics even. How would we go about making contact with such a person?

Well, you...
